Who we are
SOS Children's Villages Jordan is a national non-profit organization established in 1983 to provide alternative care for children and youth who lack parental care or are at risk of losing it. What distinguishes our care model is providing integrated care for children and youth, by covering all their needs including care, accommodation, education and skills, protection and social inclusion, food security, physical health, livelihood, and social and emotional wellbeing. The Association is guided by the UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care for Children and the Convention on the Rights of the Child issued by the United Nations. The Association also aligns its efforts with the principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, where the goals of the United Nations for sustainable development come within the focus of the Association's work and strategy.
Position title : Project Accountant
Working Location: Amman, with regular travel to Irbid and Aqaba as required

Project Background
SOS Children’s Villages Jordan is implementing SHAPE – Shaping the Future: Career Prospects and Mental Resilience for Young People in Jordan, a multi-year project in Amman, Irbid, and Aqaba. The project supports vulnerable young people aged 16–30—particularly young women, care leavers, refugees, young people from low-income families, and young people with disabilities—to strengthen their employability, mental resilience, and transition into decent employment or self-employment. It combines youth employability hubs, structured career guidance, market-oriented employability, vocational and entrepreneurship training, integrated mental health and psychosocial support, employer engagement, on-the-job training, mentoring, inclusive job shadowing, and support for viable small-business prototypes. Implementation is led by SOS Jordan in coordination with the Ministry of Youth, Ministry of Labor, Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, community-based organizations, national youth platforms, private-sector employers, and a contracted strategic technical partner.
Mission of the Position
The Project Accountant is responsible for managing the SHAPE Project's financial activities. The role includes maintaining accurate financial records, monitoring expenditures against approved budgets, ensuring compliance with organizational and donor requirements, and supporting budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
The Project Accountant performs day-to-day accounting activities, supports procurement and contract-related financial controls, and assists with audits and donor reviews. Through effective financial monitoring and analysis, the role helps ensure the efficient use of project resources and the achievement of project objectives.
Main Responsibilities
· Maintain complete and accurate project accounting records, ledgers, vouchers, cost allocations, and supporting documentation in accordance with SOS Jordan procedures, the grant agreement, and applicable BMZ requirements.
· Verify payment requests, invoices, contracts, procurement documents, attendance records, travel claims, participant allowances, and other supporting evidence before processing, ensuring eligibility, accuracy, approvals, and correct budget coding.
· Monitor expenditure and commitments against the approved budget and work plan, and prepare regular budget-versus-actual reports, forecasts, and cash-flow updates for the Project Manager and Finance Department.
· Identify variances, underspending, overspending, ineligible costs, and documentation gaps at an early stage and support timely corrective action through approved processes.
· Prepare accurate periodic and final financial reports, project tracking and reconciliations, ensuring consistency with narrative progress, activity documentation, and the organization’s accounting system.
· Manage project cash, bank, advance, payable, receivable, payroll allocation, and timesheet records as applicable, and follow up on outstanding balances and settlements.
· Participate in project steering meetings and advise the steering team on project financial management.
· Support procurement and contracting processes by confirming budget availability, reviewing financial terms and documentation, maintaining commitment records, and respecting procurement thresholds and segregation of duties.
· Maintain appropriate financial controls and audit trails for youth employability hubs, CBO arrangements, external service providers, training activities, participant support, on-the-job training, job shadowing, and job fairs.
· Apply and monitor milestone-based financial controls for small-business prototype grants and other participant-related payments, including verification of approvals, agreements, deliverables, and supporting evidence.
· Provide practical financial guidance to project staff and partners on eligible costs, required documentation, payment processes, budget coding, and internal controls.
· Participate in and prepare audit files, schedules, reconciliations, and responses to donor or auditor queries, and ensure timely follow-up of financial findings and recommendations.
· Maintain organized and secure electronic and hard-copy financial files that provide a complete, retrievable audit trail and protect confidential financial and personal information.
· Contribute financial analysis to project planning, risk reviews, procurement planning, management meetings, and decisions affecting budget utilization.
Monitoring, Reporting and Documentation
· Provide timely financial data and analysis for internal management, donor reporting, quarterly progress reviews, and project forecasting.
· Reconcile reported activities, participant payments, contracts, and deliverables with accounting records and flag inconsistencies promptly.
· Maintain financial trackers for commitments, advances, partner payments, participant support, and grant disbursements, and follow up on their timely liquidation.
· Support interim and final audits, financial monitoring visits, and compliance reviews, and maintain evidence of action taken on recommendations.
Child Safeguarding:
· Uphold and promote SOS Children’s Villages’ Child Safeguarding Standards and Code of Conduct, ensuring a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and misconduct.
· Ensure that all project activities, communications, and interactions prioritize the safety, dignity, and well-being of children and vulnerable individuals.
· Promote safeguarding awareness among project staff and partners and ensure timely reporting of any safeguarding concerns in accordance with organizational procedures.
General:
· Carry out all duties and responsibilities in a professional, ethical, and accountable manner, in line with SOS Children’s Villages policies and values.
· Perform any other reasonable duties related to the position as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Position Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
· Minimum four years of relevant accounting or grants-finance experience, preferably within an NGO or donor-funded project environment.
· Demonstrated experience in project accounting, budget monitoring, financial reporting, reconciliations, audit preparation, and document control.
· Sound knowledge of Jordanian financial, tax, payroll, and social-security requirements.
· Familiarity with institutional donor requirements and BMZ-funded projects is a strong asset.
· Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel, with strong numerical accuracy and analytical ability.
· Experience with partner agreements, participant payments, milestone-based grants, or small-grant financial controls is an asset.
· High integrity, attention to detail, respect for confidentiality, and ability to explain financial requirements clearly to non-finance colleagues and partners.
· Very Good written and verbal communication skills in Arabic and English.
· Ability and willingness to travel to project locations when required domestically.
