My name is Afaf, and I serve as a caregiver in Amman Children's Village in Jordan. Presently, I am responsible for the well-being of 5 boys and 3 girls in my household. There is no greater joy than when these children affectionately refer to me as 'Mama.'
My journey at the village commenced in 2017, initially as an auntie, but I later assumed the role of a mother once again. At this point, none of the children I've nurtured have graduated from our care. Recently, I was honored with the Ideal Employee Award. By the grace of God, I have made a significant impact on the lives of these children, witnessing their academic and social excellence, their active participation in a diverse range of activities, and the attention I've devoted to their physical well-being. Additionally, I successfully completed a mental health qualification course for caregivers at the Middle East University.
Numerous cherished memories have been woven into the tapestry of my time spent with these children. I recall an occasion when we set up a tent in front of our house within the village, using it as a dedicated space for reading and teaching some of the children how to read. Our discovery of their affection for birds led to us hanging bird images from the ceiling in our house's hallway, which served as a delightful sight for all. What was even more heartwarming was when the children would craft drawings for me, adorned with sweet and endearing words like little hearts.
Our daily routine mirrors that of any typical family. We rise together, prepare the children for school, and manage the household chores. The remainder of our day unfolds with shared activities, focused study time, television enjoyment, creative drawing sessions, and moments of play.
My emotions towards this profession are steeped in pride and gratitude. Children are a divine blessing and a trust we must cherish. Their innocence continually infuses our lives with profound happiness. I consider my vocation a humane career that abounds with love and profound emotions.
