Amman, Jordan – October 22, 2024 – SOS Children's Villages Jordan marked its 40th anniversary in a heartfelt ceremony held at the Sheraton Amman Hotel, attended by a distinguished audience of over 270 people, including ambassadors, government officials, international representatives, and esteemed guests. Among the attendees were the EU Ambassador, along with ambassadors from Spain and Australia, and representatives from the Swedish, Japanese, and Mexican embassies. The event also saw the presence of board members, past national directors, SOS alternative mothers and retired mothers, youth currently in the care of SOS Children's Villages Jordan, and proud graduates from the Association, as well as supporters and donors who have contributed to this journey. Together, they commemorated four decades of unwavering commitment to children and families across Jordan.
Mrs. Mais Nobani, the master of the ceremony, opened the event with an introduction that set an uplifting tone for the evening. Engineer Mustafa Al Wishah, Chairman of the Board of SOS Children's Villages Jordan, delivered the opening speech, emphasizing the Association’s growth and its environmental efforts: “This Association began with one goal: that every child has the right to belong to a family, to grow up in an environment filled with love, respect, and safety. Today, we see how this dream has grown into a comprehensive vision, combining alternative care, empowerment, social responsibility, and protecting our environment.”
He continued, “Our strategy has always focused on providing holistic care for children and youth, guiding them towards independence. At the same time, we remain committed to sustainability; our solar energy projects, water harvesting, and forest restoration reflect our belief that caring for our children also means caring for the planet they will inherit.”
Following this, Mrs. Lanna Idriss, CEO of SOS Children’s Villages WorldWide, emphasized the global significance of the Association's mission. She remarked, “SOS Children’s Villages stands as a beacon of hope for children and youth worldwide. Here in Jordan, the incredible dedication to family-like care has set an example for others, and we are proud to see the positive impact of this work.” She highlighted the unique model of shelters for women and their children, explaining that these safe homes empower mothers to care for their children without fear or uncertainty. This commitment to providing secure environments not only supports children but also strengthens families, ensuring that mothers have the resources and support they need to nurture their children and create loving, stable homes."
Mrs. Rana AlZoubi, National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Jordan, presented the impact of the Association: “Today, we are serving 444 children and youth annually in our programs. Since last year, 682 women and their children have benefited from our shelter services, and a total of 1,190 direct beneficiaries have been supported by our other projects. I am proud to say that 36 young men and women over the age of 20 went back to finish high school in the past few years, and 31 of them passed the Tawjihi national exam," she stated.
She continued, “These are not just numbers, it’s lives changed, futures shaped, and communities strengthened. This is the heart of what we do, giving children and youth the tools to build their futures. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has believed in us and supported our mission, from our dedicated staff to our generous partners and donors. None of this would be possible without you.”
After the speeches, a video showcased the 40-year journey of SOS Children’s Villages Jordan, highlighting key milestones and achievements. The audience was taken on a visual journey through the Association’s dedication to child care and protection, family strengthening, youth empowerment, and other pioneering programmes.
The event featured a powerful presence from youth in SOS Children’s Villages, who took the stage to introduce themselves proudly and share their personal stories. One young man stated, “I grew up in SOS Children’s Villages, and today I stand before you as a professional fashion designer.” A young woman added, “I graduated first in my class from the Faculty of Law at the university.”
A solemn moment followed as the Association honored the memory of the mothers, youth, caregivers, staff, and board members who passed away during the Association’s history. The ceremony also paid tribute to former national directors and acknowledged the immense dedication of the SOS mothers, both current and retired, whose nurturing care has shaped the lives of so many children.
The evening concluded with a reception, where guests explored a visually captivating timeline exhibit, documenting the journey of SOS Children’s Villages Jordan from its establishment in 1983 to its current role as a leader in child welfare and social development. The timeline served as a powerful reminder of the Association’s commitment to ensuring that every child grows up with the love, care, and security they deserve.
