Under the patronage of Her Highness Princess Dana Firas, President of Petra National Trust and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage, and in the presence of the National Director of SOS Childrens's Villages Jordan, Mrs. Rana AlZoubi, the first environmental campaign was launched on Sunday under "Can do" initiative recently launched by SOS Children's Villages Jordan as an environmental and community initiative bearing the slogan "My Role Matters".
The campaign involved cleaning the southern beach in Aqaba from waste, with the participation of youth from the three villages in Amman, Irbid, and Aqaba, as well as volunteers from the "Positive World of Youth" initiative, various security agencies, private and government entities, and members of the local community.
This initiative comes as a way for SOS Children's Villages to give back to the local community, acknowledging the importance of the support provided by individuals and the nation to SOS Children's Villages. This support enables the Association to provide a supportive family environment and warm homes for children.
Rana AlZoubi, the National Director of SOS Children's Villages Jordan, stated that plastic pollution threatens the health of oceans, marine life, food safety and quality, and ultimately affects human health, also contributing to negative climate impacts.
Al-Zoubi emphasized that raising awareness about the danger we face is crucial. We aim to save marine life, address the climate crisis, and ensure the safety and quality of the food we consume. This can only be achieved through collective efforts with the community and by taking action on this matter.
"Can do" initiative focuses on achieving Sustainable Development Goals, urging the world to work together to eliminate poverty, protect the environment and climate, and ensure peace for the population. The United Nations Sustainable Development Framework is vital to ensure the implementation of UN developmental activities in Jordan. The campaign to clean the southern beach of Aqaba is the first of "Can do" initiative, with a focus on supporting the achievement of Goal 13 (Climate Action) and Goal 14 (Life Below Water) of the Sustainable Development Goals.
