Zakat and Sadaqa are two important concepts in Islam that introduce charitable giving and helping others. These concepts play vital roles in promoting social justice, compassion, and community welfare, and while they are similar in their goals, and in the pursuit of assissting the less fortunate, they they differ in terms of obligations, and guidlines.
Zakat is the third of the five pillars upon which Islam is built, and is an obligatory form of giving in Islam, calculated based on specific criteria. Whereas Sadaqa is a voluntary act of charity that can be given in various forms, and amounts, at any time. It is an act of goodwill and generosity towards others.
- According to the Fatwa of the Department of General Fatwa No. 1/1/11/1206, it is acceptable to give zakat and charity donations to orphans and those who lack family support, and there is no difference between them. View The Fatwa here.
- Donations are tax-exempted, based on an official letter from the Income and Sale Tax Department.
