SOS Children's Villages Concludes Training Course for Caregivers in Care Leavers Project

September 5, 2024

Amman – SOS Children's Villages Jordan has concluded a training course on the necessary competencies for caregivers for several caregivers working within the Association’s three Villages in Amman, Irbid, and Aqaba. The course lasted for five days at SOS Children's Villages Amman and Aqaba. The first cohort graduated at SOS Village Amman in the presence of the National Director of the Association, Mrs. Rana AlZoubi, and the second cohort graduated at SOS Children's Village Aqaba with the attendance of Mr. Mohammad Al-Tawarah, Director of the Directorate of Social Development in Aqaba.

These courses are part of the Care Leavers Project, one of the projects implemented by the Association this year as a dedicated effort to help young men and women transitioning from alternative care overcome challenges and empower them to live independently with the necessary support and guidance. The Association believes in the importance of preparing young people at various stages of their lives, starting from their entry into the Association as children.

The courses focused on various competencies, including the ability to care for physical health, emotional well-being, and personal wellness; understanding the significant role of biological families in the lives of children, young people, and adolescents; handling mistakes constructively; unconditional acceptance of every child and young person in alternative care; identifying developmental needs and planning and implementing appropriate care interventions; and supporting and guiding every child and young person to become an independent and contributing adult. Other competencies were also covered.

The Care Leavers Project serves as a strategic starting point for understanding the context of leaving care and gathering fundamental knowledge about it, which facilitates the evaluation of future initiatives and projects aimed at improving the lives of young people transitioning from alternative care, and ensuring they receive better opportunities in preparation and transition to independent living. The project combines reflective processes and data-driven evaluations to support informed decision-making and positive outcomes for young people leaving care.

It is worth noting that the "care leaving" phase is a critical period in the lives of young people in alternative care programs; it represents the end of the state’s formal responsibility towards them and directs them towards self-sufficiency. SOS Children's Villages Jordan recognizes the importance of preparing young people for this transition and engages them as partners in their developmental journey to ensure that the "care leaving" phase is well-supported, with a gradual transition beginning from the child’s entry into the Association’s programs.
