One Year Later: Habiba's Journey of Healing and Hope
At SOS Children’s Villages Jordan, we were honored to welcome Habiba and her family during her treatment journey in Jordan, providing them with a safe and supportive environment throughout this important chapter of their lives.
Habiba’s story from Gaza gained international attention after her struggle with a rare medical condition and urgent need for treatment was highlighted by CNN. Following extensive humanitarian efforts, she arrived in Jordan to receive the specialized medical care she needed.
During this challenging time, SOS Children’s Villages Jordan provided Habiba and her family with a safe, stable, and family-like environment where they could focus on treatment and recovery. Beyond accommodation, they received care, support, and a sense of security while navigating a difficult and uncertain period.
Habiba’s journey is a testament to the power of compassion and a reminder that every child deserves access to care, protection, and medical treatment, regardless of circumstance.
SOS Children’s Villages Jordan’s Emergency Response for Children from Gaza
The support provided to Habiba and her family is part of SOS Children’s Villages Jordan’s “Temporary Housing and Holistic Support for Mothers and Children from Gaza” project, launched in response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Jordan’s national commitment to host 2,000 children for medical treatment.
This initiative aims to provide safe, family-like, temporary accommodation for children and caregivers (primarily mothers) who have been displaced to Jordan for urgent medical care. Many of these children suffer from severe injuries, including limb loss, as well as chronic illnesses, arriving in a fragile physical and emotional state.
Currently implemented in Amman, the project provides an integrated package of care that includes safe shelter, food, and transportation, in addition to specialized mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) through individual art and play therapy sessions. The project also ensures full coordination with hospitals and medical appointments to guarantee continuity of care, including support for children after receiving prosthetic limbs, helping them adapt and regain confidence in themselves. Alongside this, educational and recreational activities help restore hope and create a sense of safety and stability.
By addressing both physical and psychological needs, this project helps restore dignity, reduce trauma, and foster resilience among some of the families affected by the horrific humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
